SUNRISE: ANOTHER WORLD - the exciting new incarnation from the producers of the Sunrise Celebration festivals – prepares to spring to life on a beautiful new woodland site near Bath and Frome from Thursday 30th May till Sunday 2nd June, with the launch of the revolutionary Sunrise Micronation!
After seven years, the Sunrise festival crew have decided it’s time for a change. The old Sunrise Celebration festival fittingly completed its cycle of life in 2012, marking the close of the earth’s existing cycle and the beginning of a new one. Many like to dream that the new era can be a golden dawn of peace, love and care of the earth – and rather than wait for governments to make this happen, Sunrise have decided to create their own Sunrise Micronation – a ready-made paradise on earth, where ethical principals dance hand in hand with the spirit of love, unity and celebration.
Alex Lepingwell, a new director of SUNRISE: ANOTHER WORLD, explains:
“A Micronation, or model country, is an independent state, as yet unrecognised by world governments or major international organisations. Sunrise – the first ever festival Micronation - will represent the world we want to dream into being for a new era. Like all nations, the Sunrise Micronation has the right to issue passports, currency, honours and operate an embassy. Like other nations, we can and will produce our own bill of rights, the guiding principles of our free state. The Sunrise free nation will honour the ethos and principles of the festival, being committed to best environmental practice and use of alternative technology, to the free expression of creativity, to self-responsibility and non-violent communication, and to honouring our interdependence with each other and with all of life.”
Arriving at the festival, you’ll pass through the Checkpoints of Babylon - manned by automatons and faceless workers – and emerge to receive a warm welcome at the Open Gate to the free lands of Sunrise, beyond the borders. This will be a journey of wild adventure, outlandish entertainment, uplifting music and magical surprises; a journey of open learning and inspiration, of sharing skills, resources and knowledge for creating a more sustainable and beautiful world.
Emerging in the festival nation – the Central Plaza plays host to amazing headliner music acts on the Main Stage and contains the lively Sunrise Pub and Souk markets, as well as an Assembly Room for open democracy forums. In the magical Northern Forests, children play among the trees amid high-flying performance, storytelling, fire acts and art trails, and in the lakeside Global Village you’ll find the wellbeing spa and healing fields - here Tribe of Doris , celebrated intercultural drumming, dance and song pioneers, infuse a glorious mix of global sounds into the Micronation, bringing stunning live musical performances and workshops in indigenous drumming, dance and song from Africa, Latin America and other parts of the world.
In The Shire - the hobbit-y land of crafts – you can learn about eco-building, drink cider, soak up folk music and enjoy traditional fairground and wholesome dancing. At its hub, the Green Talks Dome brings an innovative forum for social and environmental education, and will be variously hosted by pioneering UK organisations for sustainable living, including a programme curated by legendary ‘Earth Pilgrim’ Satish Kumar of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine. Finally, in the wild Southlands, you’ll find electrifying nightlife from a choice of the Psy-Dance Temple, the Ghettofunk Nightclub, the Sunrise Sounds Nightclub and Secret Cinema (featuring comedy, performance, late night grooves) and much more besides.
On the music front - the Main Stage introduces a revolutionary new concept in festival programming , whereby each night will be hosted d by a renowned band or musician showcasing their own material alongside their favourite musical artists, including upcoming underground acts. Legendary DJ Krafty Kuts (aka Martin Reeves) is set to raise the roof on the Friday night, curating ‘Legends of Beats and Breaks’ –featuring Utah Saints, Freestylers and DJ@War - prepare to be blown away!
On the Saturday night, the brilliant Dub Pistols headline, bringing together The Drop, Dance Floor Outlaws, Daddy Nature and a monster mash-up hip hop, dub, techno, ska & punk. And on Sunday, amazing ska-funksters, The Beat, will be hosting The Skints, Talisman and Rankin' Roger's Dub Reggae Party, mixing up reggae, dub and ska acts chosen by Roger himself.
The new 800 capacity Sunrise Pub will feature the best in local underground live-acts. Serving up the finest local and organic alcohol, the Sunrise Pub will also host a sumptuous themed banquet on Saturday night in its intimate back room, featuring exclusive entertainment for diners, paving the way for a Sunday Roast gala, serenaded by sweet Sunday afternoon tunes.
A major festival pioneer for sustainability, this year’s event aims to be a greener than ever, with some dynamic new eco initiatives soon to be announced for 2013. Watch this space!
Alex Lepingwell says: “Sunrise: Another World promises to be more inspirational, innovative, family-friendly, funky, and more out of this world than ever before. We just know you're going to love it! Come take an adventure in the Sunrise Micronation, enjoy fantastic music, roam our fields of play and ecological inspiration and learn simple ways of living in sustainable harmony that you can take home, before spreading the positive Sunrise vibes out into the wider world.”
